TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Five land-based Harpoon missile launch vehicles and one radar truck are expected to arrive in Taiwan by the end of June, reports said Friday.
The US has approved the sale of 400 RTM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II missiles, four RTM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II maneuver missiles, 100 launcher transporter units, and 25 radar trucks in 2020. The first delivery of related equipment occurred in late September.
The military submitted documents to the Legislative Yuan indicating it planned to take delivery of five missile launch vehicles and one radar truck during the first half of this year, the Liberty Times reported. The Navy is planning to spend NT$86.6 billion (US$2.83 billion) from 2021 to 2030 on the missile systems designed to destroy enemy ships approaching Taiwan with an accuracy of more than 70%.
The shipping of the launcher transporter units is to be divided into two phases, with 32 expected by the end of 2026 and the remaining 68 scheduled to arrive in 2028 at the latest. The Ministry of National Defense plans to hold video conference meetings with the US every two weeks to discuss progress.
