TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A woman from Taiwan has been in a coma since falling victim to the car-ramming attack in Vancouver, Canada, which killed 11 people last weekend.
A man, believed to have moved from Kaohsiung with his parents and a brother a decade ago, was suspected of having driven an SUV into a crowd of revelers at a Filipino festival on April 26. The suspect reportedly had mental health problems after his brother was found murdered early last year.
One of the dozens of injured in the attack was a Taiwanese woman named Sora, per CNA. She had arrived in Canada for a working holiday.
The woman had gone to the Lapu Lapu Day festival with a friend, who returned home early. As her friends were unable to contact her later, they started searching for her, finding that she had been seriously injured in the attack and taken to a hospital.
Sora suffered fractures and injuries all over her body, and was still reported in a coma on Wednesday. Her relatives had been informed, but her mother was unable to travel abroad.
The Taiwan representative office in Vancouver said other relatives would be allowed to carry out formalities required by the hospital and police, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was helping them out with authorization documents. An association of Taiwanese in Vancouver offered assistance with accommodation, transportation, and translation services when the relatives arrive in Canada.
