TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Czech Senate passed a resolution opposing China’s misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758 and backed Taiwan’s global participation on Tuesday.
The senate pointed out that UN Resolution 2758 makes no mention of Taiwan or Taiwanese and does not address Taiwan's political status or determine China's sovereignty over Taiwan, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It also does not specify Taiwan’s position or participation in UN agencies, the senate said.
The senate criticized China for deliberately distorting the resolution, which undermines the legitimacy of the UN and the fundamental principles of international law.
The senate also voiced support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in global organizations such as the World Health Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization. It urged the Czech government to address China’s misinterpretation and misuse of UN Resolution 2758 within UN bodies and to support Taiwan’s participation in those organizations.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) thanked the senate for taking concrete actions to support Taiwan and called on the international community to continue countering China’s erroneous interpretation of the resolution. He pledged that Taiwan would continue to work with like-minded global partners to safeguard global democratic values and resist authoritarian nations’ efforts to undermine the world order.
