TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday congratulated Canada's Liberal Party and Canadians on a successful election.
CBC projects the Liberal Party, led by Mark Carney, surpassed the Conservative Party with 169 seats in the House of Commons to 144, meaning it will lead a minority government. The ministry retweeted CBC's projection and said Taiwan is looking forward to building even stronger ties by “expanding trade, enhancing resilience, safeguarding Indo-Pacific peace, stability and prosperity together.”
In a press release issued on Tuesday, MOFA said Taiwan and Canada share universal values such as democracy, freedom, and human rights. It said Taiwan-Canada relations have continued to grow steadily in recent years.
The ministry pointed out that since Canada released its Indo-Pacific Strategy in 2022, the two sides have closely cooperated in areas such as trade, technology, healthcare, and Indigenous affairs. The two sides signed the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) and the Science, Technology and Innovation Arrangement in 2023 and 2024.
In addition, in August, Canada announced its full partnership with Taiwan in the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, further expanding bilateral cooperation across various fields. MOFA said the government looks forward to working with Canada's new government.
