TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — For the first time at a UN Security Council session, the US blasted Beijing for misusing UN Resolution 2758 to exclude Taiwan from the international body.
Wu Ting (吳婷), the US mission’s deputy political counselor, on April 23 criticized a UN meeting on Unilateralism and Bullying Practices on International Relations as a performative maneuver, per CNA. Wu said the world should focus on China’s actions, "rather than its empty claims,” when assessing its contributions to the global system.
Wu said in Mandarin, “China’s actions do not match its words. China says one thing and does another.”
She said China has engaged in unilateral and unfair trade practices, harming the US and global markets. Wu said China uses state subsidies and other non-market mechanisms to generate industrial overcapacity.
Wu also accused Beijing of manipulating international financial institutions by securing loans and re-lending them to enhance its image, while profiting through lucrative development contracts. She said China simultaneously claims to be a developing country while it “weaponizes” its donor status and development programs to bully other nations.
"No more. President Trump is resetting the trade environment so that China can no longer take advantage," said Wu.
In addition to the ongoing trade war, Wu pointed to China’s coercive actions in the South China Sea. She said that although China boasted of its leadership role during its February presidency of the UNSC, it engaged in illegal obstruction of Philippine activities near Scarborough Reef.
In the spirit of the meeting's premise, Wu said, “We underline China’s misuse of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 in its attempts to isolate Taiwan, mischaracterize other countries’ policies, and constrain their choices.” She added, “This resolution does not preclude Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN system and other multilateral fora.”
Wu said the US would work closely with its partners to “counter Beijing’s goals of embedding its authoritarian principles here at the United Nations.”
On April 24, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) thanked the Trump administration for helping Taiwan seek international participation and condemned China for distorting UNGA Resolution 2758. Lin said this was the second time the administration spoke up for Taiwan at the UN and the first time the US “clearly expressed its position on the resolution at the UN Security Council.”
He also emphasized that the full text of UNGA Resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan, nor does it dictate that Taiwan is part of the People's Republic of China.
