TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A New Taipei high school student injured in a serious accident during a school cycling trip continues to improve after undergoing surgery.
Doctors performed emergency surgery on the 15-year-old student, surnamed Yen (顏), on April 22 and later transferred him to National Taiwan University Hospital, where he was placed in intensive care, per UDN. After a seven-hour follow-up operation on Saturday, his condition continues to improve.
Yen was cycling around Taiwan with classmates from Kang Chiao International School on April 22 when a driver under the influence of drugs struck their convoy. Yen suffered a severe brain injury and was left in a coma following the accident.
On the day of the incident, Yen’s condition was assessed as grade three on the Glasgow Coma Scale, indicating minimal response to external stimuli. After emergency surgery at Changhua Christian Hospital, his condition improved to grade eight on April 23 as he showed signs of consciousness, per CNA.
Once stabilized, Yen was transported to National Taiwan University Hospital. After Saturday’s extensive operation, doctors said his vital signs and other indicators had continued to improve. Though he will require further procedures and faces a lengthy recovery, his prognosis is positive.
Despite the tragic incident, Yen’s classmates decided to complete their 12-day trek around Taiwan in solidarity with him and other injured students. They finished the trip on Friday, with many wearing purple ribbons—the color of Yen’s class—to show their support.
