TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A delegation of seven lawmakers will head to the US next week to discuss security issues rather than tariffs, reports said Saturday.
The delegation leader, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Wang Ting-yu (王定宇), said its schedule would mainly include meetings with members of Congress involved in foreign affairs, defense, and intelligence issues. The group was also scheduled to visit the Heritage Foundation during its trip from April 28 to May 2, Radio Taiwan International reported.
While the visit is not directly related to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, Wang said the delegation would create a positive climate for negotiations through direct contacts with senior members of Congress and administration officials. US President Donald Trump initially slapped a 32% tariff on imports from Taiwan, but later gave the country, among many others, 90 days to negotiate while a 10% basic tariff went into effect.
Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun (鄭麗君) is expected to attend the May 11-14 SelectUSA Investment Summit in Maryland. Her trip might form an opportunity to conduct tariff talks with the US, as she has been named as head of the negotiation team.
Wang said his delegation was still in talks with administration departments, but it was not up to him to divulge which departments would meet with the Taiwanese lawmakers. Apart from Wang, Legislative Deputy Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) and two other KMT lawmakers, and two legislators from the DPP and one from the TPP will also be traveling with him.
