TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taoyuan City Government said Wednesday the city’s Green Line metro system is expected to begin operations in 2030.
The Green Line is the first metro line independently developed by the city government. Its northern section, comprising seven stations, is scheduled to begin operations by the end of next year, per CNA.
The line has a construction budget of around NT$98.3 billion (US$3 billion) and includes 10 underground stations and 11 elevated stations. Spanning 27.8 kilometers, it starts in the city’s Bade District, passes through THSR Taoyuan Station, and will eventually connect with Taoyuan Airport MRT and Taipei Metro’s Sanying Line.
A branch line will extend to Zhongli District, adding about 7.2 km to the system. This branch will include one elevated station, four underground stations, and one train depot.
The city government said it completed static testing of the line, including checks of electrical and communication systems and equipment functions. It will begin a series of trial runs in July, in collaboration with train control system supplier Siemens Mobility and train manufacturer Hyundai Rotem.
Mayor Chang San-cheng (張善政) said that high-speed and system integration testing will also begin on the tracks in July. Subsequent trials will focus on stop accuracy, signal coordination, and stability at high speeds.
The city government also said that construction of the Taoyuan MRT Brown Line is expected to begin this year, with operations scheduled to start in 2032. The line will run through the city’s Guishan District and connect with the Green Line and Taipei Metro’s Zhonghe-Xinlu Line.
The city government added that its underground railway project from Taoyuan District to Pingzhen District is expected to be completed by 2030 and begin operations in 2033. Once finished, it will connect with the Green and Brown metro lines.
