TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US security cooperation with Taiwan will continue, US Representative Seth Moulton said on Thursday.
Neither Taiwanese nor Americans want to have a war with China, Moulton told Taiwan News. Therefore, the US is “going to do whatever we can to deter that and prevent it from happening, and where that means tighter security cooperation in the name of deterrence, in the name of peace, we're happy to do that,” he said.
Though Moulton did want to see a cross-strait conflict break out, he believed Taiwan was “thinking much more creatively” to bolster its asymmetric defense to fend off China. In his visits to Taiwan over the past few years, the representative observed a “dramatic improvement” in Taiwan’s defense strategy.
The US has been encouraging its partners and allies to focus more on asymmetric defense, and Taiwan is “fully embracing it now,” Moulton said.
Aside from defense, the representative said Congress seeks to enhance economic cooperation between Taiwan and the US. “There's a lot of push behind the scenes for a free trade deal,” he said.
Moulton expressed concern about isolationist leanings in Washington amid a shift in foreign policy. “It's not a good historical trend for the United States,” he said. Enemies have taken advantage of America’s seclusion from the world in the past, he noted.
However, Moulton stressed that Democrats and Republicans “are much more united behind the scenes.” “Even within the Trump administration, there are a lot of people at very senior levels who do not believe in isolationism.”
Moulton is on the House Armed Services Committee and a ranking member on the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces. He visited Taiwan last February as part of a US congressional delegation and engaged with high-level government officials on bilateral ties and regional security.
