TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A task force from multiple agencies conducted a high-altitude cleanup of Taiwan’s Hehuanshan in Taroko National Park on Saturday.
The 135-member team cleared 900 kg of garbage from the scenic area, with some members rappelling into ravines and along cliff faces to retrieve waste, per CNA.
In addition to bottles, cans, and plastic bags, the team removed larger items such as iron barrels and polystyrene boxes. Over 200 garbage bags were collected by day’s end.
The task force included staff from the Taroko National Park Headquarters, the Highway Bureau, the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, and volunteers.
The park office said that while conditions have improved, tourism still results in litter, especially during the high season, and regular cleanups remain necessary.
Visitors are urged to respect the environment and avoid leaving behind waste, including cigarette butts and food scraps. Even biodegradable items like fruit peels decompose slowly in the cold mountain climate.
