TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan High Speed Rail said Friday that it will distribute 3,600 saplings on Tuesday morning in support of Earth Day.
THSR will distribute 1,200 saplings at each of its Taoyuan, Taichung, and Zuoying stations. The company estimates these saplings will reduce approximately 150 tonnes of carbon emissions once fully grown, per CNA.
Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, aims to honor the achievements of the environmental movement and raise public awareness about environmental protection. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the day, with the theme "Our Power, Our Planet," emphasizing the importance of promoting renewable energy and creating a sustainable future.
According to THSR, the event will be held in collaboration with the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency. The saplings, to be distributed without selection, will include varieties such as common jasmine orange, common melastoma, Taiwan lily, and Buddhist pine.
The saplings being distributed are well-suited to the local climate and known for their strong resistance to pests and diseases, THSR said.
The company said that it will continue promoting electronic tickets. On Tuesday, passengers who show their ticketing app or mobile ticket will receive an extra sapling. Additionally, passengers who prove they walked more than 8,000 steps on any day between April 1 and Tuesday can also claim one more sapling.
THSR added the pots used for the saplings are made from biodegradable pulp material, supporting environmental protection and sustainable reuse. The company noted the pots can be planted into the soil with the saplings, where they will naturally decompose and become nutrients.
CPC Corporation will also hold a sapling exchange event at 100 gas stations on Saturday. The public can bring receipts or used batteries for saplings at participating locations.
