TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two members of the Control Yuan announced on Thursday that they have initiated an investigation into Shopee's potential China investment ties.
Control Yuan members Lai Cheng-chang (賴振昌) and Lai Ting-ming (賴鼎銘) said that the popular online shopping platform may have Chinese capital involvement, per CNA. They expressed concerns that Shopee's access to Taiwanese citizens' personal data and financial information could threaten national security and economic sovereignty.
They said that Shopee's parent company, Singapore-based Sea Limited, has Tencent Holdings Limited, a Shenzhen-based company, as a major shareholder. They also noted that board members have ties to individuals with political and business backgrounds linked to the CCP.
The Control Yuan members emphasized the need for authorities to conduct oversight. They also stressed the importance of assessing the robustness of Shopee's information security mechanisms and determining whether there has been any illegal use of personal data and funds.
