TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT legislator and former Navy Commander Chen Yeong-kang (陳永康) has argued against the likelihood of China launching a full-scale invasion under the guise of a military exercise.
"It's not possible" for Beijing to shift to such a large operation, Chen said, per Nikkei Asia. This would require a "totally different" set of procedures, such as logistic support and deploying amphibious forces, he added.
Chen called China's military drills surrounding Taiwan last month "propaganda.” The People’s Liberation Army launched a two-day exercise to test its joint operations capabilities.
"If you try to conduct (an) amphibious landing, you need to build up a beachhead and the front line. If (there is) only one single line contact to [the] inland area, it's not a strategy ... it's naive," Nikkei Asia quoted Chen as saying.
The legislator urged Taiwan to adopt a national security strategy law that considers cooperation within the economy, energy, and infrastructure sectors during wartime. Chen introduced a bill that requires the Cabinet to submit a plan to the Legislative Yuan. Currently, inter-agency coordination is "very weak," he said.
