TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — After a five-day absence from public view, the legislative caucus leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) revealed in a Facebook post on Sunday that he is on vacation in Japan.
News of Ker Chien-ming’s (柯建銘) whereabouts and sudden departure from Taiwan comes amid a national recall campaign targeting Kuomintang (KMT) lawmakers and rumors of discord within the DPP caucus. Over the past week, Ker was absent from a legislative session on April 9 as well as a meeting of the DPP Central Standing Committee, according to UDN.
His presence was also expected at a DPP rally in Hsinchu on Saturday evening, part of the party’s efforts to galvanize support for its mass recall campaign. On Sunday morning, Ker posted publicly on Facebook, stating that he had traveled to Kyoto, Japan, to “take a break.”
In addition to listing politicians and slogans promoting the recall effort, Ker’s only caption read, “Undefeated, anti-communist man of iron, in Kyoto,” a reference to a fictional martial arts master. Photos accompanying the post suggest he remains engaged with the DPP’s campaign to retake control of the Legislative Yuan.
Some reports indicate that politicians in both the DPP and KMT have privately voiced concern about Ker’s recent remarks, behavior, and his five-day absence from the public spotlight.
