TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Cybersecurity firm Trend Micro Inc. issued a warning on Friday about a targeted cyberattack campaign aimed at Taiwanese.
Hackers are reportedly disguising Trojan malware as the desktop version of the Line messaging app to lure users into downloading malicious software. According to Trend Micro, individuals who search online for terms like “Line for PC” may come across counterfeit download links that closely resemble legitimate ones, per CNA.
These fraudulent websites primarily feature traditional traditional Mandarin text, indicating the campaign's focus on Taiwanese users. Line's 2024 usage statistics show the number of desktop users in Taiwan has surpassed 5 million, with the total daily calls across the country reaching 100 million.
Once installed, the counterfeit Line app can infect devices with Trojan malware. This can potentially lead to data theft or unauthorized access by cybercriminals.
A Trojan horse is a type of malware that masquerades as legitimate software, often relying on social engineering tactics to trick users into granting system permissions. By disguising malicious code as a popular application, attackers can infect a device with minimal suspicion.
Trend Micro stated that this method of concealing malware within familiar applications is a longstanding tactic used by cybercriminals. Similar techniques have been observed in the past, where Trojans were bundled with fake versions of popular apps or distributed through manipulated search engine results.
To avoid falling victim to such attacks, Trend Micro urges users to download apps only from official websites and to carefully verify URLs. As AI-driven threats grow more prevalent, distinguishing real from fake content is increasingly difficult.
Tools like PC-cillin can provide real-time protection for computers, smartphones, and tablets. AI-based anti-fraud apps are also recommended to block scams across calls, messages, emails, and social media.
Keeping antivirus software and virus definitions up to date is essential for defending against evolving threats.
