TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed two EU resolutions supporting ties with Taiwan and expressing concern about China escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
On Wednesday, the European Parliament passed motions on implementing its annual Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defence Policy.
The CFSP resolution criticized China’s misinterpretation of UN resolution 2758 and its “increasing breadth and intensity of operations,” including cyberattacks and misinformation campaigns that undermine peace in the Taiwan Strait.
It also opposed any unilateral changes to the Taiwan Strait status quo through force or coercion. This “cannot be accepted and will have high costs,” the resolution said.
In the CSDP resolution, the EU called for “regular exchanges” with Taiwan on security and cooperation in countering disinformation and foreign interference. It also encouraged both sides to share information on China’s hybrid warfare tactics in the region, including undersea cable cutting.
The EU said that increasing cross-strait tensions would have “detrimental effects on Europe’s security and economy.”
The motion urged China to cease its aggressive provocations, particularly its intrusions into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone and maritime operations in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. The EU said these actions “endanger stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) thanked the European Parliament for consistently bolstering Taiwan-EU relations and defending peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He affirmed that Taiwan will continue to build on its partnership with the European Parliament and reinforce democratic resilience.
In response to China's military exercises around Taiwan on Tuesday and Wednesday, the EU accused Beijing of “increasing cross-strait tensions” with its provocative actions. It reiterated that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are of strategic importance to the security and prosperity of the region and the world.
