TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Fertilizer said Tuesday that it shipped 6,000 metric tons of blue ammonia to Taiwanese semiconductor firms, marking a milestone in the country’s clean energy transition.
Ammonia is a key ingredient in making fertilizer. However, as an alternative energy source, blue ammonia is made by taking captured carbon dioxide and mixing it with plentiful nitrogen from the air.
Taiwan Fertilizer Chair Lee Sun-jung (李孫榮) said that blue ammonia reduces carbon emissions by approximately 60% to 70% compared to gray ammonia, CNA. Key beneficiaries include the semiconductor, electronics, and transportation industries, helping them comply with international carbon regulations such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
This move not only addresses the industry’s sustainability needs but also reinforces the company’s leadership in aligning with national clean energy policies, he explained.
Lee added that Taiwan Fertilizer plans to significantly expand its blue ammonia supply in the coming months, per Liberty Times. The company expects to provide tens of thousands of tons in Q3, prioritizing key industries to accelerate Taiwan’s carbon reduction efforts.
Looking ahead, Taiwan Fertilizer said it is committed to its net-zero goal. In addition to expanding blue ammonia production, the company is also exploring demand for completely renewable green ammonia.
