TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Dashcam footage of a driver appearing to abandon a dog on a busy street in Taichung on Sunday enraged netizens.
In the video, the car's rear door on the passenger side opened at a red light. After the dog exited the vehicle, its owner eventually drove away, and the dog chased after, per CNA.
A motorist recorded the scene on her dashcam at the intersection of Huanzhong East Road and Zhenxing Road. It was reported to Taichung Animal Protection Bureau, who tracked the dog’s owner through the license plate.
The following day, police accompanied the animal protection bureau to the owner's home, where they found the owner and dog in good spirits and physical condition. The owner had completed pet registration, sterilization, and rabies vaccination.
The owner's release of the dog onto a busy road will incur a fine of NT$15,000 (US$450) for violating Article 20, Paragraph 1 of the Animal Protection Act. The bureau reminded owners to seek assistance if encountering behavioral or feeding problems with their pets and to avoid harming animals.
If the dog owner was found to have abandoned his pet, he would face a fine up to NT$150,000 (US$4,516). The dog owner would also be prohibited from keeping animals.
