TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Three Taiwanese missing after Friday’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake near the city of Mandalay in Myanmar have been found alive, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Saturday.
Taiwan’s representative office in the Southeast Asian country had succeeded in contacting a Taiwanese woman. She survived but went missing after a building collapsed.
In a separate case, a couple of Taiwanese travelers were staying at a hotel in Mandalay when it collapsed during the quake on Friday noon. The husband escaped with only light injuries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
His wife was trapped inside the building along with hotel staff but was able to communicate with the outside. Locals are planning a way to free them, while Taiwan’s office is closely monitoring developments and gathering information about Taiwanese in other regions of the country.
The ministry reiterated that it was ready to send rescue teams to Myanmar. At present, the only airport in the country still operating is in its largest city, Yangon, 600 kilometers from Mandalay.
The ministry added it would continue to offer assistance to the two Southeast Asian countries in the spirit of “Taiwan can help, Taiwan can lead.”
