TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Songwriter Fang Wen-shan (方文山) showcased his lyrics-inspired artwork on Thursday at Keelung Art Museum.
He said at the opening that he has transformed his passion for words into three-dimensional art, per CNA. The lyricist is known for penning several of Jay Chou’s (周杰倫) songs including “With Hair Like Snow” and “Orchid Pavilion Preface.”
His obsession with pipes and chains is evident in his replica of the Western Zhou dynasty’s “Mao Gong Ding”(Cauldron of Duke of Mao), which features a mechanical steampunk-like exterior. Inside the vessel, instead of traditional inscriptions, he has engraved the lyrics of “Blue and White Porcelain,” a song he wrote for Chou.
“Crimson Beauty Like Frost,” another of Fang’s works, is a statue that represents two sides of creativity, per UDN. He said he often writes lyrics late at night, fully immersed in his work. He likened songwriting to a dialogue with oneself, sometimes even feeling like a split personality.
Keelung Deputy Mayor Chiu Pei-lin (邱佩琳) said that Fang’s understanding of mechanics, art, and aesthetics is truly admirable. She praised Fang’s ability to infuse his words with emotion and thanked him for capturing the essence of lyrics through art.
Fang’s exhibition will be on display at Keelung Art Museum from March 27 to April 19.
