TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Minor parties and civil society groups said Wednesday there should be more public holidays as opposition lawmakers debate the idea in the legislature.
Members of the New Power Party, Green Party, Taiwan Obasang Political Equality Party, and rights groups gathered at the legislature to call for more holidays that demonstrate progressive values, per CNA. They called for holidays to mark International Women’s Day, Gender Equality Day, environmental causes, or the passing of same-sex marriage legislation.
New Power Party Chair Wang Wan-yu (王婉諭) said amending the public holiday law provides rare a chance to unite Taiwan around common values and reduce overwork. She called on the legislature to consider progressive values when assessing the law.
Taiwan Green Party Spokesperson Wang Yen-han (王彥涵) said a day off for Women’s Day would highlight gender income inequality. Wang also suggested a day off for Earth Hour, and Dignified Work Alliance Representative Yeh Chin-yu (葉瑾瑜) suggested public holidays commemorating free speech and the lifting of martial law.
The Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights and the Taoyuan Industrial Union Federation joined the calls. The three political parties have no representation in the legislature.
The call came as the KMT pursues amendments that would restore seven public holidays. Lawmakers disagree about the national importance of the proposals.
