TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Philippines repatriated former Army Captain Lee Chen-yu (李振育) to Taiwan Tuesday to face corruption charges.
While involved in military engineering projects in 2018 and 2019, Lee forged rental contracts, helping him pocket NT$3.88 million (US$117,000) in rental fees from several companies, Liberty Times reported. As the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office launched an investigation, he fled to the Philippines in March 2020.
Lee was declared a fugitive eight months later, with the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau cooperating with the authorities in the Philippines to track him down. They found Lee and arrested him in Cebu in February 2024.
The deportation process took more time than expected because there was another suspect with the same name. The Investigation Bureau and the National Immigration Agency worked out the problem with the Philippines National Bureau of Investigation, resulting in Lee traveling back to Taiwan on Tuesday, where he faced questioning by Taoyuan district prosecutors.
