TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei City Government issued a warning on Friday about big temperature differences, with swings between day and night exceeding 11 C.
The public was urged to dress accordingly and be mindful of the rapid temperature drop in the evening. The Central Weather Administration forecasts that while temperatures will gradually rise, early mornings and evenings will remain chilly due to radiation cooling until Sunday, per CNA.
Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital family medicine attending physician Liu Peng-chih (柳朋馳) advised individuals with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, such as asthma, to be extra careful. Large temperature changes can worsen these conditions and increase the risk of sudden death.
Liu also recommended that individuals on regular medication continue their treatment and minimize exposure to environments with significant temperature fluctuations. He identified three key moments when accidents are most likely to occur indoors: waking up in the morning, entering or exiting the bathroom, and stepping outside.
When heading outdoors, he recommended wearing extra layers that can be gradually removed as needed.
For individuals with asthma or respiratory issues, Liu advised using masks and scarves to reduce exposure to cold air and prevent bronchospasm. Bronchospasm can lead to difficulty breathing, wheezing, and coughing, and in severe cases, it may be life-threatening, according to Ton-Yen General Hospital.
Liu emphasized the importance of not waiting until sweating occurs to remove clothing. Wind can increase the risk of catching a chill.
