TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) said Thursday that more than 40 Taiwanese are being investigated for holding Chinese ID cards, with 14 already having their Taiwan household registration canceled.
Liu said if a Taiwanese national is found to hold a Chinese ID card, their Taiwanese citizenship will be revoked, per CNA. Liu said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Immigration Agency, and the household registration offices will be notified simultaneously to revoke their National Health Insurance, ID cards, and passports.
When asked to comment on the administrative action against Chinese influencer “Yaya in Taiwan” (亞亞在台灣) for supporting military annexation of Taiwan, Liu said the NIA has acted under the law. Liu said although Yaya's statements online have been “inconsistent,” the decision has already been made and will not be reversed.
Liu confirmed that Yaya was given 10 days to leave Taiwan voluntarily. Liu said if the Chinese national, who has a marriage-based resident permit, exceeds this period, she will be deported.
Deputy Interior Minister Wu Tang-an (吳堂安) said that the Cross-Strait Act covers household registrations in Taiwan and China. If a person holds a household registration in China, their Taiwan household registration will be revoked accordingly, said Wu.
When asked whether those who lose their household registration due to holding a Chinese ID card can have it reinstated, Wu said it "won't be very easy." He said each case will be reviewed under the regulations on restoration of household registration for former Taiwanese nationals from China.
In addition, regarding the recent case of a police officer in Taoyuan who identified himself as Chinese on Douyin, Liu acknowledged that the officer received a demerit, but some questioned whether the punishment was too lenient. Liu said that the Taoyuan City Police Department had followed standard disciplinary procedures, but since Douyin is banned on government systems, the National Police Agency and relevant authorities are conducting an investigation.
