TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US Representative Byron Donalds introduced the “America Supports Taiwan Act” on Friday, calling on all federal agencies to use "Taiwan" instead of "Chinese Taipei."
The bill mandates that all federal agencies update their websites within 14 days of enactment and reaffirms Washington’s support for Taiwan’s independence amid escalating Chinese coercion.
The proposed act is co-sponsored by Representatives Mike Collins, Barry Moore, and Tom Tiffany.
Donalds called Taiwan a "key US strategic partner" and said, "The name ‘Chinese Taipei’ is nothing more than a tool of Beijing’s strategy of diplomatic coercion."
"The federal government needs to stop deadnaming Taiwan," Collins said. "There is no reason why the United States, the greatest and most powerful nation on the globe, should allow Communist China to dictate the name of one of our greatest international allies."
Moore added, "It is time for the United States to show the people of Taiwan that we recognize their right to self-governance."
Last week, US Senators John Curtis and Jeff Merkley introduced the Taiwan Representative Office Act, urging the Trump administration to rename the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) to the “Taiwan Representative Office.”
