TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The transport ministry confirmed Taiwan Railways Corporation Chair Tu Wei’s (杜微) resignation on Saturday, saying he quit due to career plans.
UDN reported that transport ministry officials said Tu’s resignation letter has been sent to the Cabinet for review. It thanked Tu for his service and said it had not decided his successor.
The ministry said the railways corporation tried to convince Tu not to resign but he insisted. Deputy Transport Minister Wu Sheng-yuan (伍勝園) will temporarily fill the chairperson role.
Tu recently reached the retirement age of 65. He said it was not an appropriate time to discuss the resignation when reporters asked him about the decision at an event on Saturday, according to CNA.
Last month the corporation said it was considering raising fares for the first time in 30 years after posting a record NT$13.79 billion (US$417.60 million) loss. Tu led the Taiwan Railways Administration before it became a state-owned corporation.
