TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — G7 members encouraged peaceful resolution of issues across the Taiwan Strait and opposed changing the status quo by force in a joint statement on Friday.
The member states also said they support “Taiwan’s meaningful participation in appropriate international organizations.” The comments were part of a statement that also covered the Ukraine war, the Middle East, conflicts in the Caribbean and Africa, North Korea, and sabotage.
The members’ statement removed a reference to “one China policies” included last year. In a separate statement on maritime security, the G7 members said their “basic policies on Taiwan remain unchanged.”
The G7 also said they remain “seriously concerned” by what has happened in the East China and South China Seas. They expressed concern over freedom of navigation in the area.
The members added they are concerned with China’s advancing military power. They said China should not conduct activities that undermine “our communities and the integrity of our democratic institutions.”
The statements were released after the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, US, and the EU met in Canada.
