TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Miaoli County has invited TSMC to build a factory there and highlighted its plan to open up more land for industrial use.
TSMC said its plans for Taiwan would accelerate last week after announcing a NT$3.29 trillion (US$100 billion) investment in the US. Miaoli County Government released a statement on Thursday saying TSMC would need more land in Taiwan because of this and called on the semiconductor giant to set up a factory within its jurisdiction, per CNA.
The county noted its natural resources and plans to create three more industrial areas. It said the plans would expand the Zhunan Science Park to 660 hectares.
Miaoli County said the developments are part of the “Taoyuan-Hsinchu-Miaoli Silicon Valley Promotion Plan.” They include three new areas to the north, south, and west of the existing science park.

Miaoli County said urban planning processes for a five-hectare development east of the existing park are expected to be completed within the year. It is conducting a feasibility study on a 17-hectare area west of Toufen Interchange. Also, a feasibility study for a development further west should be finished before June.
Miaoli is rich in hydro and offshore wind power resources, while hydrogen power is under development. The county government said Zhunan Science Park is conveniently located, with access to Hsinchu Science Park in the north and Taichung’s Central Science Park in the south.
“The location is convenient for transport and has ample potential for investment and establishing factories,” the statement said. It added that Miaoli County is working with the National Science Council to recognize the developments as major national infrastructure works.
Gaining this recognition would expedite land use change applications and provide access to government subsidies. It would also allow private companies to lease government land and expropriate private land, under certain conditions.
