TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Oscar-winning Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) found herself in the middle of controversy Thursday after she uploaded a social media post listing Taipei as part of China.
On Tuesday, Yeoh, 62, attended the opening of Tiffany & Co.'s flagship store at Taipei 101, per Liberty Times. The event marked a rare appearance for Yeoh in Taiwan.
During an interview with the media, she expressed gratitude: “Thank you, Tiffany, for bringing me to Taipei because I do love this country very much.” Apart from the brand's event, Yeoh did not participate in any other public activities during her visit to Taiwan.
Her reference to Taiwan as a country drew criticism from Chinese who demanded she recognize Beijing's “one China” principle, per MirrorMedia.
Yeoh later uploaded to Instagram a photo of her attending the Tiffany opening and again thanked Tiffany but this time referred to the city as “Taipei China.” Taiwanese responded to the post by writing “Taipei, Taiwan” and uploading Taiwan's national flag, while others expressed surprise and disappointment.
MirrorMedia noted that Yeoh will soon be heading to China to collaborate with Chinese actors such as Turbo Liu (劉昊然) and Bai Ke (白客), as she plays the main character in the new Chinese film “Lady R.”
Yeoh has yet to respond to a request from Taiwan News to comment on the matter.
