TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The families of the six victims of a deadly outbreak of bongkrek acid poisoning in Taipei last March will each receive NT$1.8 million (US$54,590) in compensation, reports said Thursday.
Diners became ill after eating at the vegetarian Polam Kopitiam Malaysian restaurant inside a shopping mall in the popular Xinyi District. Six people died and 27 others received hospital treatment.
The Taipei District Prosecutors Office in January indicted the restaurant’s owner, the branch manager, the chef, the acting chef, and an intern on charges including negligent homicide and breaking the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation.
Prosecutors on March 11 agreed with a request from the Association for Victims Support for NT$1.8 million of compensation per fatality, or a total of NT$10.80 million, per CNA.
The sum broke a record for compensation cases in Taiwan related to food safety violations. The association continued to assist with living expenses and legal action for the families of the victims.
