TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A British teacher had his contract terminated by a private language school on Wednesday after he became involved in an altercation on a Taipei MRT train.
The incident happened Tuesday at 9 p.m. on the Taipei Metro, per TVBS. The British man was reportedly speaking loudly in the train carriage, prompting a Taiwanese man, surnamed Tsai (蔡), to ask him to lower his volume.
The man responded by reportedly shouting at Tsai in English. When the train arrived at a station, the man knocked off Tsai's hat, uttered an English expletive, and exited the carriage. Tsai followed him off the train and reported the incident to police.
Police responded and referred the man to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for investigation on charges including intimidation under the Criminal Code.
An investigation found the man was an English teacher at Annie's School. The school issued a statement Wednesday indicating the teacher had been employed since February and was still undergoing training.
The school said he had not yet been assigned a class to teach and acted normally at work. However, the school said his actions on the MRT were a serious violation of its zero-tolerance policy toward violence.
The school reported the incident to the Ministry of Education, suspended the teacher, and terminated his employment contract.
