TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – More than 10,000 7-Eleven convenience stores in Taiwan and the Philippines will dim their lights for one hour on March 22, reports said Wednesday.
The stores in Taiwan have taken part in the Earth Hour campaign for four years, but this will be the first time that the company has cooperated with the Philippines, per CNA. The action takes place each third Saturday of March, with more than 18,000 sites in at least 190 countries participating.
The operator of 7-Eleven Taiwan, President Chain Store Corporation, said it had obtained approval from the World Wildlife Fund to serve as one of the organizers of Earth Hour in Taiwan. The convenience store operator said it had persuaded 540 related companies, suppliers, partners, and other businesses and associations to dim lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on March 22.
Last year’s edition of Earth Hour helped save 289,000 kilowatt hours of electricity and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 143 tons, a record amount for the annual event, according to state utility Taiwan Power Company.
