TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A Japanese woman in her 20s, later diagnosed with measles, visited Jiufen and traveled around Taipei by MRT, the Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday.
The woman, a resident of Akashi in Hyogo Prefecture, flew by Vietjet Air from Osaka to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on March 1, the day after she first felt a fever, the Liberty Times reported. She traveled by airport MRT from Terminal One to Taipei Station, then to Jiantan Station on the Tamsui-Xinyi Line, where she visited Shilin Night Market, per CNA.
In the evening, she took the MRT from Jiantan to Zhongshan, where she stayed at a hotel. In the afternoon of March 3, she took a bus from Taipei to Jiufen in New Taipei City’s Ruifang District and back before visiting Taipei's Ningxia Night Market and eating at a hotpot restaurant in Datong District.
On March 4, she traveled by airport MRT back to Taoyuan’s Terminal One for an Air Asia flight to Osaka. The Centers for Disease Control said it received the patient's information from Japan on March 8.
People who visited the same locations around the same times are advised to self-monitor their health for 18 days. They should visit a health institution if they show symptoms, including fever, coughing, a runny nose, or a rash.
This year, Taiwan has recorded 13 cases of measles, with ages ranging from 10 to over 60. Seven cases were imported from Vietnam, with Hanoi reporting 120 new cases in just one week, taking the total for 2025 to 745.
This past week, four new cases in Japan brought the total to nine in 2025. The number of infections was higher than last year, a trend also seen in countries such as the US and Canada, the Centers for Disease Control said.
