TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US support for Taiwan in the World Health Organization remains strong, Jonathan C.Y. Sun (孫儉元), director-general of the foreign ministry’s Department of International Organizations, said at a press conference on Tuesday.
The Trump administration’s support for Taiwan’s international participation "has not changed nor weakened," Sun said.
He pointed out that the US issued two statements directly related to Taiwan and rejected China’s misinterpretation of UNGA Resolution 2758 at the 156th session of the WHO Executive Board last month. "This is a strong sign" of its support, the director-general said.
Additionally, the US backed Taiwan’s international participation in the US-Japan foreign ministers' meeting and the US-Japan-South Korea joint statement, Sun said.
The foreign minister will closely monitor U.S. policy on funding, resources, and personnel arrangements while ensuring smooth coordination between Taiwanese and U.S. teams.
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to pull out of the WHO in January.
