TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 16-year-old high school student from Vietnam drowned in Chiayi on Sunday.
Four male students from a vocational high school in Chiayi fell into the Bazhang River near the Mituo Yingyue Bridge, CNA reported. The Chiayi Fire Department said a member of the public reported the incident at 1:04 p.m.
The four Vietnamese students were part of a larger group from the same school on an excursion to the river. The boys who fell into the water were reportedly fishing from the riverside, per UDN.
Other students were unaware their classmates had fallen into the river until first responders arrived to help the boys ashore. The fourth boy was unresponsive when he was pulled from the water at 1:57 p.m., per UDN.
Rescuers attempted CPR before rushing the boy to St. Martin de Porres Hospital for emergency treatment. However, doctors were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at 2:28 p.m.
Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the students falling into the water. Interpreters from the vocational school are assisting with communication between the foreign students and the police.
