TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The US Department of State on Friday rejected China’s misinterpretation of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758 to justify its claims over Taiwan.
"Intentional misuse and mischaracterization of UNGA Resolution 2758 is part of China's broader coercive efforts to isolate Taiwan from the international community," a State Department spokesperson told CNA.
The resolution "puts no limits on any country's sovereign choice to engage substantively with Taiwan" and "does not preclude Taiwan's meaningful participation in the United Nations system and other multilateral fora," the spokesperson added.
At a press conference on Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi (王毅) reiterated the claim that UNGA Resolution 2758 fully resolves the issue of China's representation in the UN and that "the only designation for the Taiwan region in the UN is China’s Taiwan Province."
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Wang’s remarks. "These absurd and false claims distort the truth, deviate from reality, openly and unilaterally undermine the status quo, and attempt to deceive and mislead the international community," the ministry said. It emphasized that the resolution does not mention Taiwan nor state that Taiwan is part of China.
"Beijing’s deliberate manipulation of this resolution contradicts the universal principles upheld by the UN Charter," the ministry added.
Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) called on the international community to reject China’s repeated misinterpretation of the resolution and its attempts to alter the reality that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other.
