TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Bamboo Union gang leader Huang Shao-tsen (黃少岑) was buried in Taipei on Thursday in the presence of 1,800 guests and 430 police officers looking out for fugitives from the law.
Huang died on Feb. 4 at the Taipei Veterans’ General Hospital at the age of 75, after reportedly leading Taiwan’s largest gang for at least 15 years. In common with funerals of prominent organized crime leaders, police prepared extra patrols to prevent incidents but also to locate suspects, per CNA.
At Thursday’s event, three fugitives wanted in separate cases of fraud, drugs, and organized crime authorities were detained, while police questioned two minors at the local station while contacting their parents.
The guest list at the funeral included mourners from the US, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and South Korea. One of the most prominent Taiwanese attending the event was one of Huang’s predecessors, Chang An-lo (張安樂), also known as the “White Wolf.”
The late Bamboo Union leader’s funeral committee counted former Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) of the Kuomintang as honorary chair, and Democratic Progressive Party Legislative Caucus Whip Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) as its chair. Committee members included former KMT Chair Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱), KMT Vice Chair Sean Lien (連勝文), and Ruentex Group Chair Samuel Yin (尹衍樑).
