TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Lawmakers nominated the new heads of legislative committees on Wednesday, resulting in eight DPP, seven KMT, and one TPP convener, CNA reported.
Legislative committees scrutinize bills after the first reading. A committee's convener decides the agenda for committee meetings.
The eight legislative committees and their new co-chairs are:
- Internal Administration Committee, DPP Chang Hung-lu (張宏陸) and KMT Niu Hsu-ting (牛煦庭)
- Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee, DPP Puma Shen (沈伯洋) and KMT Huang Jen (黃仁)
- Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee, DPP Liu Chien-kuo (劉建國) and KMT Su Ching-chuan (蘇清泉)
- Judiciary and Organic Laws and Statutes Committee, DPP Chuang Jui-hsiung (莊瑞雄) and KMT Wu Tsung-hsien (吳宗憲)
- Transportation Committee, DPP Hsu Chih-chieh (許智傑) and TPP Lin Kuo-chen (林國成)
- Education and Culture Committee, DPP Lin I-chin (林宜瑾) and KMT Ko Ju-chun (葛如鈞)
- Finance Committee, DPP Lai Hui-yuan (賴惠員) and KMT Lai Shyh-bao (賴士葆)
- Economics Committee, DPP Tsai Yi-yu (蔡易餘) and KMT Hsieh Yi-fong (謝衣鳯)
All co-conveners sat on the committees they now head in the last legislative session. Su, Wu, Lin I-chin, and Lai Shyh-bao convened committees in the last session.
Recent media reports said there were internal DPP disputes regarding its nomination for the foreign affairs and defense committee, per FTNN. Responding to questions about this after his nomination, Shen said he had spoken to DPP Legislator Chen Kuan-ting (陳冠廷), who reportedly wanted the role, and that there were no issues.
Several conveners are targets of the many recall campaigns in action across Taiwan. Campaigns seeking the removal of Niu, Lai Shyh-bao, and Hsieh have reached the first recall stage, CNA reported Monday.
