TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taiwan baseball league confirmed it was fined NT$660,000 (US$20,000) for violating World Baseball Classic rules on the use of electronic devices during the qualifiers.
The violations, which included unauthorized personnel entering the dugout, took place during Taiwan's first game against Spain on Feb. 21. A staff member reportedly used a mobile phone while placing equipment in the office, per CNA.
Tournament regulations prohibit the use or possession of electronic devices by any team personnel, including players, coaches, trainers, and translators, in the dugout or bullpen during games.
Before the next game, security conducted strict credential checks. An inspection discovered mobile phones, computers, and printers in the dugout, leading to further penalties.
Security also identified a notable mismatch between the number of personnel present and the credentials issued, with 39 credentials unaccounted for. Trainers and team doctors were among those instructed not to re-enter restricted areas.
WBC President Jim Small warned that repeated violations involving electronic devices could lead to disqualification. The CPBL has admitted to the error and will pay the fine while implementing measures to prevent future violations.
