TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of National Defense Wednesday released a video of two Chinese naval vessels involved in PLA live-fire exercises south of Taiwan.
The MND announced Wednesday afternoon the People's Liberation Army had set up a live-fire zone without prior warning about 74 km off the coast of Kaohsiung and Pingtung. In response, the MND sent naval, air, and coastal forces to monitor PLA activities.
Wednesday night, the ministry released a video showing an officer from the Kee Lung-class destroyer Su Ao ordering the PLA Type 054A frigate Huanggang to leave Taiwan's restricted waters. It released a second video that showed two Chinese naval vessels operating in the live-fire zone.
The MND identified the two ships as China's Type 071 amphibious transport dock the Simingshan and its Type 903 replenishment ship the Qiandaohu.
The defense ministry monitored the situation until 3:40 p.m. when the Chinese ships left the drills area. The MND said the military will continue to monitor developments in the air and maritime space and deploy forces when necessary.
