TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US commitment to Taiwan’s security has not changed despite policy shifts on Ukraine, Director-General of the foreign ministry’s North American Affairs Department Wang Liang-yu (王良玉) said during a press conference on Tuesday.
Wang was asked if US President Donald Trump's criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's failure to end the Russian invasion in the past three years would signal any changes in the US stance toward Taiwan. She said successive US administrations, including Trump, have reaffirmed their security commitments to Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances.
Washington has stressed the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait, including at the US-Japan Summit and in the US-Japan-South Korea Foreign Ministers’ joint statement. The director general added that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated US opposition to unilateral changes to the Taiwan Strait status quo in an interview last week.
Wang said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other government agencies will continue strengthening US-Taiwan relations while striving to achieve peace through strength.
