TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Fatty Iguana, Taiwan’s first reptile-themed restaurant, offers visitors a unique dining experience alongside a diverse collection of exotic animals.
The restaurant, located in Taichung, is home to more than 40 species, including chameleons, monitor lizards, frilled lizards, pythons, and meerkats. Guests can interact with select animals by choosing from interaction cards at the counter, which change daily based on the animals’ condition.
Unlike traditional animal cafés, Fatty Iguana prioritizes animal welfare by charging a fee for interactions. The restaurant told Taiwan News that this policy ensures only genuinely interested guests engage with the animals, promoting responsible handling.
Before any interaction, staff provide visitors with educational briefings on each species’ behavior and safe handling techniques.
Among the restaurant’s most unique residents is the Sulawesi black sailfin lizard (Hydrosaurus celebensis), a rare species in Taiwan, with fewer than 10 individuals known in the country.
Fatty Iguana noted that these lizards are difficult to care for, as they sometimes refuse to eat, making them a challenging choice for pet owners.
Another highlight is the mata mata turtle, which the restaurant says is one of the largest in Taiwan. This distinctive reptile uses a suction feeding technique, selecting only appropriately sized fish as prey.
In addition to its animal exhibits, Fatty Iguana offers a menu featuring steak, fried foods, and specialty drinks. Customers can personalize their beverages with small candies, marshmallows, and edible animal-shaped sugar decorations.
While reptiles are generally kept separately in captivity, Fatty Iguana challenges this approach by housing diamondback terrapin turtles, red-bellied short-necked turtles, and fish in a shared environment. The restaurant seeks to dispel misconceptions by showcasing a semi-natural habitat where aquatic species from different water levels coexist.
Through hands-on experiences, Fatty Iguana aims to highlight the commitment required for reptile care while also serving as a hub for reptile enthusiasts to exchange knowledge. The restaurant hopes to educate visitors on responsible pet ownership and encourage thoughtful consideration before acquiring an exotic pet.
