TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan is well-prepared to handle potential policy shifts under the second Trump administration, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said at a DPP luncheon on Sunday.
While some may perceive Trump’s policies as uncertain or disruptive, Lai said they should be viewed as opportunities for Taiwan to grow stronger and more competitive, according to DPP Legislator Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤).
Wu said that the president also underscored escalating Chinese threats against Taiwan. He stressed the need for stronger national defense and security measures to protect the country.
Lai said economic resilience was equally important. Taiwan’s economy must be able to withstand external pressures, he said.
Lai urged DPP lawmakers to stay committed to protecting the nation’s sovereignty and democracy. He quoted former US President John F. Kennedy: "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."
The president reiterated that his administration's goals were to enhance military strength, bolster economic resilience, and deepen ties with democratic allies.
In his opening remarks at the Halifax International Security Forum in Taipei last week, Lai said Taiwan wants peace but has no delusions about it. He pledged to “stand firm and safeguard” the nation’s sovereignty and “free and democratic way of life.”
