TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The leader of Japan’s Democratic Party for the People, Tamaki Yuichiro, arrived in Taiwan on Sunday at the invitation of the Taiwanese government for high-level security discussions.
During his three-day visit, Tamaki will meet with President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), and other officials, per CNA. The visit aims to emphasize the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and strengthen Taiwan-Japan parliamentary relations. Tamaki is expected to discuss his party’s approach to diplomacy and national security.
In December, Tamaki was suspended from his leadership role for three months following an extramarital affair. He will resume his position on March 4.
His visit follows Japan’s reaffirmation of support for Taiwan Strait peace in a joint statement with the US and South Korea last week.
