TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US Senators Jim Risch, Jeanne Shaheen, Pete Ricketts, and Chris Coons introduced a resolution on Friday opposing China’s efforts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty and international participation.
The resolution rejects China’s misinterpretation of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758 to justify its territorial claims over Taiwan. It also clarifies that Washington’s “one China” policy is distinct from Beijing’s “one China” principle and opposes China’s attempts to block Taiwan from joining global organizations.
UNGA Resolution 2758, passed in 1971, recognized the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as the "only legitimate government of China," replacing the Republic of China (ROC) in the United Nations. However, the resolution does not define Taiwan’s political status or affirm China's sovereignty over Taiwan, according to the US Senate resolution.
US Representatives Young Kim, Ami Bera, John Moolenaar, and Raja Krishnamoorthi also backed the resolution in the House of Representatives.
"America does not recognize China’s claim over Taiwan," Risch said in a Senate Foreign Relations Committee press release. “Once again, the Chinese government has attempted to trick the world and subvert the United Nations for its own purposes—but we see these malign tactics and stand in support of our friends in Taiwan.”
Shaheen emphasized that UNGA Resolution 2758 does not dictate Taiwan’s political status, nor does it prevent countries from engaging with Taiwan or participating in UN bodies. "Full stop," she said.
Ricketts added that the US must "firmly reject Beijing’s strong-arming and revisionist history while supporting Taiwan’s meaningful participation and engagement on the world stage."
