TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Hundreds of people wearing dark clothing marched through the streets of Taipei Saturday to remind the public of the upcoming 78th anniversary of the 228 Massacre.
More than 600 people representing 70 organizations walked solemnly by some of the major landmarks of the 1947 event, an uprising against the corruption and authoritarianism of the Kuomintang regime of leader Chiang Kai-shek.
As long as the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall still stands on Taiwan ground, transitional justice has not completely been realized, according to activist and former lawmaker Chen Yung-hsing (陳永興). He said a lot has been achieved, but those responsible for the massacre and the White Terror and Martial Law periods have not apologized, per CNA.
Chen warned that the Chinese Communist Party is even more dictatorial, authoritarian, and brutal than the KMT. If China were to succeed in occupying Taiwan, the 228 Massacre would become future tense, he said.
The marchers also read out the names of victims and put flowers on the main locations of the massacre in Taipei. Commemorating the events of 1947 is necessary to prevent a repeat. Only if the perpetrators face their responsibility, will it be possible to move on to healing and forgiveness, a statement read by the organizers of the march said.
