TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The General Association of Chinese Culture held its executive committee election on Tuesday, selecting 35 members and six candidates for the new term.
Among the elected members, 23 were re-elected, while 12 were newly appointed, per UDN and CNA.
Notable re-elected members include President Lai Ching-te (賴清德). New additions to the committee include Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), United Microelectronics Corp. founder Robert Tsao (曹興誠), movie director Yang Li-chou (楊力州), and rapper Dwagie (大支).
Following the election results, the TPP caucus raised concerns over the composition of the new committee. The party claimed the committee includes several individuals with strong ties to the DPP while others work outside the culture industry.
It pointed to Tsao’s inclusion, arguing that he has been involved in political controversies and has little direct connection to cultural affairs. The TPP also pointed out that Tsao, who led a recent KMT legislator recall campaign, does not align with the traditional definitions of cultural leadership.
GACC responded by saying that it is a legally registered association that holds elections for its executive and advisory committee members every four years, in accordance with the Civil Associations Act. The organization said all new members were voted in by members during the general assembly.
