TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) thanked Taiwan’s healthcare system for 30 years of service on Friday.
Speaking at a sustainability forum celebrating the anniversary, Lai said National Health Insurance has served as a “guardian mountain” over the past 30 years, protecting the well-being of all citizens, per CNA. He said the healthcare system has a satisfaction rate of over 90%.
The NHI was established in 1995 and introduced mandatory enrollment and a comprehensive single-payer system. Lai said since its implementation, social problems that once existed have been reduced, ensuring that citizens no longer lose basic living security due to illness.
In its early stages, the system benefited from the foresight of former President Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) and then-Health Minister Chang Po-ya (張博雅). It now boasts a coverage rate of 98% to 99%, Lai said.
He added Taiwan’s healthcare system has ranked first globally for six consecutive years, earning high international recognition. However, he acknowledged the NHI still faces challenges, including a shortage of medical specialists in internal medicine and surgery.
Lai stressed the need for sustainable solutions to address challenges, ensuring the system supports those in need.
