TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) thanked volunteers on Thursday for their efforts in rebuilding homes following a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that struck near Chiayi County last month.
Huang led officials from the social affairs and disaster prevention offices to check home repair progress in mountainous Nansi District, an area where many families were hit hard, per CNA.
Huang explained that due to public welfare considerations and budget constraints, the city cannot cover the needs of all victims. He thanked the Tzu Chi and Heng Shan Foundations, who contacted the city to offer assistance.
Last month, Tzu Chi called up over 2,000 volunteers. They provided care to more than 4,000 affected households and gave out 40,000 hot meals, per UDN. The foundation said that it will continue to support disaster victims by offering daily necessities and emotional comfort.
For temporary lodging, Huang said the city is working with Southern Region Water Resources Branch to renovate an old dormitory. The project involves cleaning and repairing 34 rooms, with completion expected later this month.
Tainan City Government stated it is committed to helping residents return to normal life as soon as possible. It urged individuals and businesses to join the rebuilding effort.
