TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Yunlin Public Health Bureau reported Wednesday that four individuals died from severe flu complications between Jan. 21 and Thursday.
The bureau reported 18 severe flu cases as of Wednesday. All four fatalities were men aged 65 and older with chronic conditions, including hypertension and diabetes. None had received a flu vaccine, per CNA.
Public Health Bureau Director Zeng Chun-mei (曾春美) said the Centers for Disease Control purchased an additional 100,000 doses of subsidized flu vaccine, with 2,830 doses allocated to Yunlin. These will be distributed to local health stations, with vaccinations beginning Thursday at contracted medical institutions.
Zeng reminded those eligible for priority vaccination to contact local health stations to schedule an appointment. With flu season peaking, the public is urged to practice good hygiene.
The county’s Education Department reported more than 600 student absences Wednesday due to illness. Colds and chickenpox accounted for the most, with 398 students affected, followed by stomach flu with 162 absences, and the flu with 47.
Four county schools reported more than two students in the same class have the flu. The county government suspended classes at the affected schools for five days for thorough disinfection.
